ALL STUDENTS, *AGES 5+, ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE!

The Nutcracker is a beautiful ballet performance, but students across all dance genres are encouraged to audition. There are a wide variety of roles, in addition to the ballet required roles, that our Mini, Youth, Junior & Teen classes will love (i.e. Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre etc.) Should you have any questions please don’t wait to Contact Us!

Students should audition with the level they will be in the 2023/24 school year.

1:00 – 1:30 PM: Lilacs, Primary, Mini
1:30 – 2:00 PM: Elementary, Division 1, Junior, Youth :
2:00 – 3:15 PM: Division 2, 3, 4 & Teen
3:30 – 5:00 PM: Division 5 & 6
5:00 – 5:30 PM: Division 5 & 6 for Clara (optional)

Arrive 15-30 minutes before scheduled audition time so students can get measured, we can answer questions and so you can turn in Pages 5, 6 and 7 of the Nutcracker Audition Packet.

Saturday August 26th at 4S Dance Academy. See the listed times above by level to determine when to audition.

Yes! The audition is a fun and exciting process, and students learn different roles and the story of the Nutcracker.  It is helpful for us to see students dance together as a group before casting roles. If your student cannot make the audition, please contact Ms. Shay.

Yes! All students who audition will be cast!

Yes! Our Nutcracker production is for our 4SDA students!

No! We have created roles for dancers who do not do ballet. They may not be as featured as our ballet students, but it is still fun and exciting for students to participate.

Rehearsals will always be held on Saturdays between 1:30 – 6:30 PM. Younger children with less demanding roles typically rehearse for a shorter period of time (approx. an hour), and will not rehearse every weekend until the performance draws near. Older students with more elaborate roles will likely rehearse more frequently (Saturdays for multiple hours and potentially weekday evening rehearsals during their classes). Updated rehearsal schedules will be posted in the studio on the bulletin board and online. Note:  There will likely be a rehearsal on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.

Yes! Rehearsals are mandatory! It is incredibly difficult to choreograph and set group pieces with students missing, and it is unfair to all who participate. Rehearsals are mandatory, and students who miss without notice may get dropped from their role.

Students do not need to participate in Nut Prep Week, though we highly encourage it for students Division 1 and up! Being back in the studio will build their confidence for the audition and will get them excited for Nutcracker! Eleve students are expected to attend Nutcracker Prep Week.

December 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. We anticipate we will do 2 – 3 performances, so please keep the entire week open for extra rehearsals and theatre time.

Unlike the recital where you purchase and keep a costume, Nutcracker costumes are rented and the cost is included in the production fee.

Yes. There is production fee that is due when registering for the audition. Every student that auditions will be cast in the production. The fee helps to cover all of the rehearsals with professional instruction, costume care and other production costs.

  • Registration & Payment must be completed before auditioning. All students who audition will be given a part!
  • Only 4SDA staff and auditioning children are allowed in the studio.
  • Pages 5, 6 & 7 of the Nutcracker Audition Packet need to be turned in at the audition.

** A Parent FAQ Zoom Meeting will be held on Thursday, August 17th at 5 PM. Zoom details will be emailed. **
